Why is Charlize Theron not in ‘Furiosa’?

The upcoming Mad Max film, Furiosa, is set to star Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth. The prequel, directed by George Miller, will take place 20 years before the events of 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road, and is the fifth instalment in the Mad Max franchise which started with the original film in 1979. Anya Taylor-Joy will be portraying Furiosa, a role previously played by Charlize Theron in Fury Road. Other cast members include Alyla Browne, Tom Burke, Lachy Hulme, Nathan Jones, and Josh Helman.

George Miller originally intended to have Charlize Theron reprise her role as Furiosa in the prequel. However, this plan was changed because Miller was not satisfied with the current state of anti-aging technology in films, as seen in Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman. Miller explained that despite Theron being excited about the script and concept art for Furiosa, the time that had passed between Fury Road and Furiosa, coupled with the changes in Warner Bros.’ leadership, caused delays in production. When Miller revisited the idea of having Theron star in Furiosa, he concluded that the required anti-aging technology was not advanced enough for his vision.

Anya Taylor-Joy, best known for her performance in the 2015 horror film, The Witch, and her recent role in the Netflix series, The Queen’s Gambit, will be playing Furiosa. She has also worked with director Robert Eggers on 2022’s The Northman, voiced Princess Peach in The Super Mario Bros. Movie and portrayed Gina Gray in the fifth and sixth seasons of Peaky Blinders.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga has received positive reviews, with some calling it another spectacular film in the petrol-soaked franchise. Despite the absence of Charlize Theron, Miller’s decision to cast Anya Taylor-Joy has piqued the interest of viewers and left them eager to see her portrayal of Furiosa on the big screen. The film is set to premier in 2023
