Neil Druckmann, the director of The Last of Us, has spoken out in favour of the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to revolutionise content creation. In an interview with Sony, Druckmann lauded the potential for AI to create nuanced dialogue and characters, resulting in a wider range of creative possibilities. However, he also acknowledged that there are ethical concerns surrounding its use, such as the vast amounts of energy needed to power computers, and the lack of transparency surrounding where large language models (LLMs) obtain their training data.

In addition to its creative potential, Druckmann observed that AI could also help to reduce production costs and technical hurdles, making it easier to translate game assets into other media. Remote work tools were also praised for streamlining production processes and reducing travel, allowing Druckmann to oversee the production of The Last of Us Season Two from his office in LA, despite the live filming taking place in Canada.

Despite his enthusiasm for new technological tools, Druckmann emphasised the importance of mastering the fundamentals of art history, composition, and storytelling, as well as understanding the limitations and evolution of different tools over time. He stressed that with AI, creativity sets the limits, and that the mastery of these fundamentals is essential for effective direction.

The use of AI in content creation is a growing area of interest, with a wide range of industries exploring its potential uses for generating music, writing articles, and developing video games. However, much of this potential remains untested, and further research will be needed to fully understand the benefits and challenges of integrating AI into the creative process
