Lucy Letby, a former neonatal nurse convicted of murdering seven babies and attempting to murder six others, has been denied permission by senior judges to appeal against her convictions. Dame Victoria Sharp, sitting with Lord Justice Holroyde, said that Letby has been refused the right to appeal. The full reasons for the judges’ decision were not made public, and the details of Letby’s appeal bid were also unable to be published due to legal reasons.

Letby was convicted in August 2023 of carrying out the murders and attempted murders whilst working at the Countess of Chester Hospital between 2015 and 2016. Letby’s lawyers had previously asked senior judges for approval for an appeal against her convictions during a two-and-a-half day hearing that took place in May 2026. Dame Victoria had previously indicated that Letby’s appeal was related to four points surrounding legal applications made by her lawyers during the trial.

This decision made by the senior judges marks the end of Letby’s appeal process. However, the 34-year-old will still face a retrial at Manchester Crown Court in June on one count of attempting to murder a baby girl, known as Child K, in February 2016.

The full judgment from the senior judges regarding the refusal of Letby’s appeal will be handed down in due course. As of now, Letby remains convicted of her crimes and will have to face the consequences of her actions in the coming weeks and months
