A single individual has died due to a landslide on the verge of the North York Moors National Park. The event occurred at Carlton-in-Cleveland around 13:15 BST, and emergency services are still working on the site. The location has been cordoned off, and North Yorkshire Police have urged people to avoid the area.

BBC Yorkshire’s climate correspondent Paul Hudson said that a yellow weather alert for rainfall was active; the area witnessed the amount of precipitation expected in a whole month in only twelve hours. No other person was affected by the landslide, as per officers’ statements, and further updates will follow as soon as possible. The site of the event is thought to originate from Carlton Bank.

Loftus, which lies twenty miles away from Carlton-in-Cleveland, recorded 42mm of rainfall since 7 o’clock in the morning, making it more than the typical amount for May in less than one day. There is more rain in the forecast for the remainder of the week. Carlton Bank is part of the Cleveland Hills and looks over Carlton-in-Cleveland and Faceby towns.

David Hugill is a local council member who traveled to the site on Wednesday and expressed his devastation about the situation. He also addressed his condolences to the bereaved family and friends of the victim.
