Geoff Kitchen, a 73-year-old British man, has been identified as the passenger who died on board a Singapore Airlines flight after it was hit by severe turbulence. Reports suggest that Mr Kitchen suffered a suspected heart attack after the plane experienced a sudden drop in altitude. A number of other passengers were injured in the turbulence, with seven critically injured and dozens with minor injuries.
Mr Kitchen was described as being well-respected and appreciated in his local community. He was part of the Thornbury Musical Theatre Group in South Gloucestershire and had served the group for over 35 years. The group’s statement mourning Mr Kitchen’s loss described him as “always a gentleman with the utmost honesty and integrity”.
Singapore Airlines’ CEO, Goh Choon Phong, apologised for the incident and offered his condolences to Mr Kitchen’s family. He stated that the airline was “very sorry for the traumatic experience” for everyone on board flight SQ321 and assured that the airline was fully cooperating with relevant authorities on the investigations.
The plane was travelling from London to Singapore carrying 211 passengers and 18 crew, including 47 individuals from the UK. Ten hours into the flight, the plane encountered sudden extreme turbulence over Myanmar’s Irrawaddy Basin, with passengers describing scenes of “absolute terror”. The Boeing 777-300ER was diverted to Bangkok and made an emergency landing, with Singapore Airlines providing medical assistance to passengers and dispatching a team to Bangkok to offer additional help
