During this year’s Just Like Heaven festival at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig joined Phoenix for a surprise performance. Thomas Mars and the band are currently recording a new album, but Mars mentioned to the crowd that they may not return to the US for “another few years, maybe less.” However, he also promised to “cheer them up” and then introduced Koenig to perform their collaborative track, ‘Tonight’. Koenig then picked up his guitar and joined in on Phoenix’s classic hit ‘1901’ and their final song of the night, ‘Identical (Reprise)’.
Just last month, Mars joined Vampire Weekend for a special gig to celebrate a total solar eclipse. The two performed ‘Tonight’, marking the first time the pair had performed the song live together.
Phoenix is set to perform at this year’s edition of All Points East and Primavera Sound, while Vampire Weekend is currently in the midst of preparing for their UK and Ireland tour in 2024.
