Asking someone what they’ve changed their mind about can reveal a lot about a person. Politicians in particular are known for doubling down on their positions, but changing your mind can be a sign of strength. In fact, the question of what people have shifted their stance on is a regular topic in the “Life lessons” series on Positive News.
In an interview with the website, Welsh singer Charlotte Church revealed that she’d changed her mind about the treatment of trans people. Although she’d never been a “TERF” (trans-exclusionary radical feminist), she was previously protective of the “female experience” when pregnant with her third child. It was only after listening to a range of voices that she realized that there was no reason for her to contribute to anything that made the lives of trans people harder.
Sir Tim Smit, founder of the Eden Project, discussed a shift in his own thinking. Once he believed that most people were “out to get you”, and that every neighborhood was full of dread. He’s since changed his mind, recognizing that most people are actually kind and that the 5% who aren’t have often had something happen to them to “screw them up”.
Writing for Positive News, Isabella Tree revealed that learning to live with nature in a state of what had been considered “mess” was a big change in her thinking. She used to think that British landscapes with neat fields, canalised rivers, and isolated pockets of woodland were beautiful. However, she now recognizes they can’t be considered beautiful if they’re not functioning as they should.
