Spotlight: UVF 'knew Billy Wright was a state agent'

A former loyalist killer has claimed that the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) believed that its leader in Mid Ulster, Billy Wright, was a state agent. Laurence Maguire made the allegations during an interview with BBC NI’s Spotlight programme, in which he described being called to answer questions about Wright for a UVF inquiry in the 1990s. Maguire said that he began to have suspicions about Wright when he prevented him from killing three suspected members of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) who were later killed by the group, reportedly accused of being state agents.

The spotlight has been back on the issue of UVF murders after the government asked the Supreme Court to rule on whether some intelligence on such attacks should remain secret. Maguire, who was imprisoned in 1994 for five murders, told Spotlight that he had been asked by Wright to track three men believed to be in the IRA.
