Liverpool City Council has issued a final reminder to households receiving a 25% single person Council Tax discount to update their circumstances if any changes have been made. At present, there are roughly 90,000 households receiving the discount, which is typically reserved for single adults who are over 18; however, there can be occasions where the discount is given to larger households. While letters were sent late last year to inform residents on how to remove their discount if they were no longer eligible, the reminder letter generated around 1,750 households coming forward to cancel their discount, which ultimately raised an additional £750,000 for the Council to use this financial year.
According to the local government’s latest statistical data, the Council will soon commence a review by a third-party business to review the number of adults living in a property. If the review determines that the single-person discount was wrongly reimbursed, the discount will be removed and the amount owed backdated to the date when the changes were initially made. However, households that have not made any changes do not have to take any action related to their discount status.
Liverpool City Council’s Deputy Council Leader and Cabinet Member for Finance and Resources, Cllr Ruth Bennett, stated that it was critical to acknowledge those who notified officials that a change in their eligibility status occurred after implementing the amnesty last year. Bennett added that it was equally vital that the council’s records were up-to-date and that the proper amount of Council Tax was being charged to each household. Ultimately, the Council’s goal, according to Bennett, is to ensure they received the Council Tax owed, directing the revenue to fund essential services.
