Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram has revealed new images of the proposed £100m Liverpool Baltic station scheme, showcasing the new rail link in the midst of one of the fastest-growing areas in the region. The station is one of four planned by Mayor Rotheram, with work also underway on new stations at Daresbury, Woodchurch, and Carr Mill, all set to be delivered over the next few years. Once completed, every borough of the city region will have had a new station since the Mayor took office in 2017.
The new station is subterranean, a unique aspect that has presented some design challenges. However, the plans for Liverpool Baltic demonstrate the city region’s efforts to create a modern, fully accessible network with state-of-the-art infrastructure that unlocks opportunities for people and businesses alike. The plans include step-free access from street to train, waiting facilities for passengers, fully accessible toilets, secured monitored cycle parking, and links to an enhanced local active travel network.
Mayor Rotheram’s “Merseyrail for All” commitment aims to reach communities that are not currently connected to the local rail network in the region. The new pioneering battery-powered technology will make it possible to extend the lines beyond current boundaries, and it is expected to encourage more residents to travel by public transport. The project supports the Mayor’s target to reach net-zero by 2035, the most ambitious target for a city region in the UK.
The new station at Liverpool Baltic is set to serve the UK’s eleventh-coolest neighbourhood, according to Time Out magazine. A public consultation was held during June and July, ahead of finalising the planning application if approved. Subject to approval, work is expected to begin on-site in 2025, with the station opening by the end of 2027
