Kevin Costner’s passion project Horizon: An American Saga premiered at the Cannes Film Festival yesterday. After a 35-year long wait, the actor and director became visibly emotional when he received a standing ovation from the audience. Horizon is a Western that has been described as a “two-part event” set during the American Civil War, with a focus on the expansion of the American West.
Following the screening, Costner took to the floor to share a few words. He said, “I’m sorry you had to clap that long for me to understand that I should speak. Such good people. Such a good moment, not just for me, but for the actors that came with me, for people who believed in me who continued to work. There’s no place like here. I’ll never forget this – either will my children.”
In an interview last week, Costner mentioned his decision to leave the TV series Yellowstone, after having been reported that he wanted to commit more time to his Horizon project. He disputed these claims, saying the Yellowstone team was not telling the truth. Costner said that filming for Horizon was scheduled for his days off filming Yellowstone, and that he fit it into the gaps. But, they just kept moving these gaps.
Yellowstone was his “first priority,” though he claimed the production team were “doing a tap dance.” He also said he had a contract to film another three seasons and questioned why the team “didn’t stick up” for him amid rumours he wasn’t available to film. Costner further claimed he left filming for Horizon for a “whole month” to film Yellowstone’s fifth season, but there was “no script” when he arrived and “things imploded.”
