Belfast One’s Business Improvement District (BID), Cathedral Quarter BID, and the Linen Quarter BID have collaborated to establish and begin recruitment for Belfast City Centre’s first Night Czar. The position is now open for applications, and the deadline is the 20th of May. The new role aims to oversee the development of the city’s night-time economy, providing it with a strong voice, as well as acting as a focal point for both stakeholders and the media to interact with. In addition, the Night Czar is to be a recognized expert who can inform how the sector needs to be supported, developed, and enhanced.
This is a part-time job, and the Night Czar will not report to a direct line manager. Instead, the successful candidate will report to the BID boards of the three collaborating partners mentioned earlier. The announcement of the Night Czar role follows Belfast’s recent award of the Purple Flag. This award recognizes the thriving and diverse night-time economy mix of entertainment, dining, and culture in the city.
Belfast’s Night Czar position is part of a growing campaign called Free The Night. This campaign has been established to demand improvements in Belfast’s night-time economy. It stands against what many have called “unfair” rules, such as the severe restrictions on opening times, which saw nightclubs forced to finish at 3:AM. In some parts of Europe, these are among the strictest restrictions targeting licensed opening times. The Free The Night campaign has expressed its encouragement for the appointment of the Night Czar as well as conversations with the Purple Flag Steering Group and BIDs, while emphasizing that it remains the government’s responsibility to take full responsibility for the night-time economy.
Anyone who wants to apply for the job of Belfast’s Night Czar can do so by going to the website nijobfinder.co.uk. This new initiative is expected to add a valuable contribution to the growth of Belfast’s dynamic night-time economy
