Sabrina Carpenter made her debut on the popular show, Saturday Night Live, on May 18th, where she performed several of her hits, including her well-received song Espresso. Her latest track was released recently and is following in the footsteps of her previous hits, the popular 2022 album, Emails I Can’t Send, and other recent releases such as Nonsense and Feather. After releasing a Christmas EP, she began touring with Taylor Swift, and joined the pop icon as a support act during her most recent Eras tour dates across the US and Asia.
Sabrina Carpenter’s performance of Espresso on her first appearance on Saturday Night Live took place in a mock cocktail bar where she sang while fending off the attention of two dancing waiters. During her set, she also sang her earlier releases, Feather and Nonsense, while declaring, “I’m on SNL and you’re not!” She has been known to catch her fans off guard by changing the outro to her song Nonsense when she performs it live, and that was no different during her SNL performance.
In a new interview with Apple Music, Sabrina Carpenter has explained the meaning of Espresso and how she began working on the song while in France. She wanted to create something that would be ideal to play live while having a sense of humor. Carpenter mentioned that there was something exciting about the song because of the persona present all through it, which made it really fun to live sing along with a crowd:
“Those are the ones that people, I think when they don’t know my music or who I am or anything, they can just tune in to a single song and kind of leave with a better idea of my sense of humour.”
Carpenter also highlighted the empowering lyrics and added that she aimed to channel a feeling of confidence in her work:
“For me, equating it to caffeine and that addiction was really fun and I definitely have a caffeine addiction as it is. So it really ends up being a full circle for me.”
Fans and critics alike were blown away by her performance, with many turning to social media to share their excitement. Carpender’s appearance on SNL has been seen as a sign of great things to come for the young artist
