Celebrations after Celtic won the premiership led to damage and injuries in Glasgow. Police reported that 19 people were arrested and four officers sustained injuries from an estimated 25,000 fans who gathered in the city centre over the weekend. Fans gathered at Trongate, climbed lamp posts and let off flares and damaged bus stops and traffic signals. The route for Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, which took place on Sunday, was also affected. Glasgow City Council called the amount of damage and disruption “unacceptable” and had teams work overnight to clear up litter and debris.

Supt John Menzies advised members of the public to behave and warned everyone that violence and assaults on police officers or the public were unacceptable. Members of Glasgow City Council urged people to show a basic level of consideration and respect toward fellow citizens and public property. A clean-up operation was carried out through the night to restore the area to its former state.

Last year, the council reported that three people were seriously assaulted during celebrations and a man was hospitalised. Ten arrests were made. Fans also gathered at Glasgow Cross to celebrate their Premiership trophy win last year. Following last weekend’s celebrations, investigations are ongoing into a number of incidents, police said.
