Diddy, the famed rapper, has issued a public statement in which he expressed remorse for his “inexcusable” behavior in a video showing him assaulting his ex-girlfriend Cassie. CNN released video footage of the said incident on March 17, which appears to show the rapper beating his former partner and throwing an unidentified object at her. The video aligns with testimony Cassie gave in a lawsuit she filed against the rapper.
Diddy published an apology video on Instagram on May 19, where he portrayed vulnerability. In the video, he said that while it is challenging to reflect on the darkest moments of his life, he had to do it. He admitted he was “fucked up” and that his behavior in the video was unacceptable. The rapper took responsibility for his actions, admitted disgust, and said he sought professional help and asked for “God’s mercy and grace.” He concluded by stating he was not asking for forgiveness and was “committed to being a better man each and every day.”
The rapper has been under investigation for sexual trafficking, assault, and harassment. His homes in Miami and Los Angeles were raided in March; the raids were seemingly related to the rape and abuse accusations brought forth by women, including Cassie, with whom Diddy had a romantic relationship from 2007 to 2018. Cassie filed a lawsuit against Diddy last year, accusing him of physical abuse and rape.
The Instagram video was different from Diddy’s usual flamboyance and self-promotional persona. The rapper put on a vulnerable face while admitting that his behavior was wrong and expressed remorse. Sexual abuse and assault are highlighted in the media regularly and with much persistence, with many people shifting the blame onto the victims. However, Diddy has taken full responsibility for his actions, which is laudable in a society where people often deflect when criticized
