An elderly man has passed away after a car went into the water at Buncrana pier in County Donegal. Gardaí, or Irish police, were informed of the incident early on Sunday morning. The car was later recovered from the water following a search and recovery effort, and technical examinations of the scene are now being carried out. Members of the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service also attended the incident.
A Sinn Féin councillor for the area, Jack Murray, has spoken of the shock and sadness in the local community following the tragedy. He recalled a similar event in 2016 when five members of one family lost their lives in a similar incident. “We rally together and support each other now,” he said. “There is a grieving family in our community tonight and our thoughts and prayers are with them.”
Gardaí have asked for any witnesses to the event to contact them. The cause of the car entering the water remains unknown, and authorities have not identified the deceased. Reports suggest that police divers may have been involved in the recovery of the vehicle
