DNA Leisure, an online retailer based in Luton, was linked to another murder in 2022 after one of the teenage killers of Omar Khan, 38, bought over £1,000-worth of weapons, including the murder weapon, from the website. The 17-year-old murderer used his mother’s ID to order 65 products, including 39 hunting knives, 15 machetes, and 12 swords, among other items. All of the weapons were delivered to his home without any challenge or difficulty, raising a “massive loophole” and “massive concern”, according to Detective Inspector Justine Jenkins of the Bedfordshire Police.
DNA Leisure, run by Adam Eliaz, one of the candidates in the Junior Apprentice in 2010 when he was 17 years old, claimed the knives to be interesting collector items that were not afraid of heavy use. No police has been able to recover the other blades that the teenage killer bought. During the trial, the murderer claimed that he sold, lost or had some of the blades confiscated.
Det Insp Jenkins revealed her concern over the growing trend for younger offenders to use hunting knives and machetes in fatal attacks, and emphasised the danger of such weapons, which were “totally more dangerous” than kitchen knives. She also noted that the larger size of the hunting knives and machetes increased the likelihood of hitting a major organ if someone was stabbed. “I’m not sure it comes down to an arms race”, she said, “it’s probably a little bit down to how accessible they are”.
DNA Leisure had said previously that they “age-check every order” and “report all suspicious purchases”. However, the length and scale of the purchase did not raise any suspicion
