Las Vegas’ Sphere was host to the opening night of Dead & Company’s residency yesterday, in a performance that featured epic visuals spanning 60 years of history. Comprising members such as Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir and Mickey Hart along with John Mayer, Oteil Burbridge, Jeff Chimenti and Jay Lane, the band announced the run of shows in February. The residency will run until 13 July, with three shows per week scheduled.
The set lasted over three hours and featured 19 tracks, incorporating state-of-the-art technology and giant LED screens onto which imagery and characters from the Grateful Dead’s history were projected. Band members rounded out the show with an extended jam of the Dead’s “Hell in a Bucket,” followed by covers of Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door” and “Not Fade Away,” made famous by The Rolling Stones.
The Grateful Dead had a historical connection to Las Vegas, as both Mickey and Weir performed together in the city during the 1980s and 90s. According to Kreutzman, “To all those who make it there, have a blast, my friends.”
