Marvel’s first ‘DOOM’ comic since 2000 pays tribute to MF DOOM

Marvel Comics has acknowledged the death of legendary rapper MF DOOM in its latest comic book issue, DOOM. Known for his embrace of the Doctor Doom character and his mask, MF DOOM is featured in the opening page through the lyrical phrase taken from his song ‘Accordion’. The newly published DOOM issue is the first since the year 2000 and comes as a tribute to MF DOOM, who died on October 31, 2020, from a rare and severe hypersensitive reaction known as angioedema.

The new DOOM comic book is the first issue to be published since the late rapper’s passing. MF DOOM, real name Daniel Dumile, is remembered fondly by the music industry. In July 2021, his widow confirmed that a severe reaction to his hypertension medications caused his death. Since his passing, the industry is committed to sustaining his legacy, with S.H. Fernando Jr. announcing a forthcoming biography of the rapper entitled ‘The Chronicles of DOOM: Unraveling Rap’s Masked Iconoclast.’

Moreover, Thom Yorke shared a remix tribute of ‘Gazzillion Ear’ by MF DOOM, while Long Beach in New York has named an entire street block after the late rapper. The comic book pays homage to MF DOOM’s influence through the personification of Doctor Doom, whose image he frequently associated with, further symbolizing the tremendous impact he had on artists worldwide.

MF DOOM’s contributions will be sorely missed, but his music and creative spirit continue to serve as an inspiration to future generations. The Marvel publication follows the tradition of honoring MF DOOM, a leading figure in the world of hip-hop, and is expected to attract a broad audience, including DOOM fans beyond the comic book industry.
