Ahmed Alid, a Moroccan asylum seeker, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of 70-year-old Terence Carney in Hartlepool in October. Alid, who stabbed Carney multiple times, claimed that the murder was committed in “revenge” for the Israel-Hamas conflict. Alid was also found guilty of attempting to murder his housemate, Javed Nouri, who he had attacked prior to the murder of Mr Carney.
The sentencing was handed down at Teesside Crown Court on Friday, with Alid being given a minimum term of 45 years in jail. The murder was deemed to be an act of Islamic extremism, and the murder of a completely innocent victim was deemed to be both senseless and abhorrent.
The murder of Mr Carney sent shockwaves through the community, with many local people expressing outrage at the senseless killing. His family described him as a kind and gentle man who didn’t have an enemy in the world.
While Mr Carney’s family hopes that the sentence will bring them closure, they know they will never fully come to terms with what happened. The fact that an innocent man had his life taken in such a senseless act is something that they will always struggle to understand
