Top sporting dream team aims to score big with major events

The Liverpool City Region is forming a new team aimed at securing major sporting events in the area. Led by Clare Briegal, the outgoing World Netball Chief Executive, the board will be responsible for devising and delivering the region’s major sports strategy. For the next three years, the team will work with six local authorities to attract high-calibre, in-demand events to the area.

Former medal-winning athletes are joining the Sport Liverpool board alongside some of the sports industry’s most influential figures. The board will oversee all activity around major events in the area, ensuring a boost to the local economy and national and international showcases. Members of the team will also prioritise sustainability, leaving a legacy for future generations while involving the city’s residents.

Board members include Clare Briegal, Anyika Onoura, Catherine Forshaw, Andy Owen, Stuart Campbell, and Dickon White. Anyika Onoura is a former Team GB track and field international athlete who has since become a critically acclaimed author and consultant. Catherine Forshaw is a regulatory sports lawyer with national governing bodies and elite athletes, sports clubs, and leagues as clients. Stuart Campbell’s impressive back catalogue includes organising the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow in 2024 and the World Gymnastics Championships in Liverpool in 2022.

Additionally, the Liverpool City Region will retain several existing board members, including Culture Liverpool’s Head of Major Sports Events Jen Falding and ACC Liverpool Commercial Director Ben Williams. Those on the board will not be paid an allowance, although their expenses will be covered
