The world of rock music is in mourning following the announcement that veteran American drummer John Barbata has died at the age of 79. Barbata was best known for his work with legendary bands, Jefferson Starship and Jefferson Airplane. His death was confirmed on Monday May 13, 2024, by Jefferson Starship via their official Facebook page.
In a post that read “We are saddened to hear of the passing of the great John Barbata, Jefferson Starship’s original drummer. Our thoughts go out to his family, friends and fans. Rock in peace, Johnny!”, the band expressed their condolences. According to Best Classic Bands, Barbata died on May 8. However, no further details about his death have been given.
Barbata played the drums for a number of bands over his career, including Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, The Turtles, and The Sentinels. He left The Turtles in 1969, joining Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young for a spell of tour dates and appearing on the band’s 1974 live album ‘4 Way Street’. Barbata continued to record with David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, and Neil Young in various iterations of the group and solo projects.
Despite being offered an opportunity to drum for both Elvis Presley and The Eagles earlier in his career, Barbata declined and instead went on to join Jefferson Airplane for their final studio album, 1972’s ‘Long John Silver’. He then continued with the band following its rebranding as Jefferson Starship, playing on several albums between 1974 and 1979. He leaves behind a legacy of incredible music and will be missed by fans across the world
