Consultation to launch on a £4m high street revamp in Anfield

Liverpool City Council is set to launch a public consultation for a £4m scheme aimed at revamping the main high street in Anfield. AECOM has partnered with the council, with the goal of visually enhancing and creating a healthier public street to prioritise pedestrian safety and movement. Improvements to Walton Breck Road, Oakfield Road, Pulford Street, Back Rockfield Road and Gilman Street will be considered as part of the scheme. The proposed changes include wider footpaths, public realm features, new landscaping, new trees, and new underground bins to improve local walking routes. On-street and resident parking bays will also be added, with efforts directed towards rationalising car parking and taxi ranks whilst upgrading crossings.

The proposals suggest reducing the speed limit on Walton Breck Road; this move is aimed at creating safer conditions for local pedestrians between the junctions of Blessington Road and Kemp Avenue. Access to Back Rockfield Road from Pulford Street may be closed, with a safe area created for cars to turn around. The scheme is the latest facet of a £300m investment programme of the Anfield area, first launched in 2014, to create real improvements to living, working and visiting the locality through the revitalisation of existing infrastructure, with new shops, revamped homes and environmental amenities.

The consultation will feature drop-in events at The Liverpool Lighthouse, Oakfield Road, L4 OU on 22 May, 23 May and 12 June, where preliminary designs will be on display. An online consultation will also commence on 22 May, allowing the locals to give feedback until 14 June, which will shape the scheme’s final design. A report on the public consultation’s findings will be submitted to the council’s cabinet and it is hoped a contractor will be selected to begin delivering the final scheme next spring. Feedback will also shape the plan for Anfield Square, which will be publicised over the summer
