Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds have unveiled behind-the-scenes footage of the making of their 18th album, Wild God, in a new docu-film directed by Megan Cullen. The video features Radiohead’s Colin Greenwood alongside the band and producer Warren Ellis laying down different parts of the songs, including the album’s title track. The film is the first part of a series that offers a glimpse into the creative process behind the forthcoming LP, set for release on 30 August. Wild God features 10 songs on which the band moves between traditional themes and new experimental styles, heightening the rich imagery and emotive narratives for which Cave is known.

Cave, who was recently announced as part of a 2024 UK and European tour set to kick off in Germany this September, says he hopes the album’s effect on listeners will be the same as the impact it has had on him. “It bursts out of the speaker, and I get swept up with it,” he says. “It’s a complicated record, but it’s also deeply and joyously infectious”. Cave describes Wild God as a product of the emotional state of the band, with no masterplan in place before they began work. “When it hits, it hits. It lifts you. It moves you. I love that about it.”

In a recent interview with NME, Cave spoke about his new music and a more urgent need to connect with people. “There’s a kind of duty in that, that maybe I didn’t feel before,” he said. “That I have at my disposal something that’s very valuable – to make music – and I don’t want to squander that opportunity in phoning in gigs or doing half-hearted attempts. Everyone is as important as each other.” Cave also shared advice with an artist considering boycotting The Great Escape in solidarity with Palestine.
