An exhibition called EUFORIA! has just opened in Warsaw to showcase the city’s club scene from 1989 to now. The exhibition takes a broader view of Warsaw’s club culture as a crucial part of its cultural and social context, demonstrating the transformative nature of the early club scene in the city. The exhibition opened recently at Muzeum Woli and is on display until December 15.
Part of the exhibition looks at the political context underlying the early scene, particularly events between the fall of communism and joining the European Union. It also documents the rise of clubs in the early years and their closure, resulting in a “short-lived nature”. The exhibition is a subjective presentation of the club venues that appeared in the urban fabric during the period of transformation and which helped define Warsaw’s club scene for many years.
EUFORIA! acts as a walk-through the cultural heritage of Warsaw’s clubbing scene and features photographs, videos, prints, posters, zines, and other memorabilia. Many of these items have never been seen in public before. The exhibition includes influential clubs like Fugazi, CDQ Filtry, and Piekarnia, among others. Le Madame and Chłodna 25, two of the more well-known unorthodox venues in Warsaw are also included in the exhibition.
The exhibition provides a rare insight into the venues of Warsaw’s clubbing during the period of change and offers an attempt to look at an aspect of the city’s cultural heritage that has so far remained undocumented.
