Elizabeth Hurley has addressed criticism surrounding her son’s directorial debut, Strictly Confidential. The movie triggered controversy when it was discovered that Damian Hurley would direct his mother through an intimate scene. Liz plays the mother of Rebecca, a character whose death is being investigated by Georgia Lock’s Mia. Critics have been split on the movie thus far, with The Guardian ultimately stating that it seemed “like you’ve sat through a hundred episodes of a saucy daytime soap with the saucy bits cut out.”
Speaking to The One Show, Hurley said she thought the reactions to the intimate scene was “demented.” She explained that she and her son hadn’t given it any thought ahead of shooting because of how “low budget” the film was, adding that the scene was just one of many that had been shot that day. “Any kind of intimate scene, it’s just technical,” she said.
Earlier in May, Damian Hurley told the Sunday Times that it had felt “totally normal” to direct his mother in the scene. He added that he had spoken to many friends who were also part of the second-generation of parents in the industry and that those things considered bizarre by outsiders were “just part of everyday life for us.”
Alongside its mixed reception, Strictly Confidential has been celebrated as a pioneering release, being one of the first feature-length films to be entirely shot during the COVID-19 pandemic. Alternative reviews on the movie have described it as “more Austin Powers than Agatha Christie” but give it credit for having “bizarrely compelling moments”.
