Jerry Seinfeld wanted Chris Rock to recreate Will Smith slap for new movie

During Jerry Seinfeld’s directorial debut in Unfrosted, Chris Rock was allegedly asked to recreate the moment when Will Smith slapped him at the 2022 Oscars. Smith was offended after Rock made a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Following the incident, Smith publicly apologized to Rock, resigned from the Academy, and was banned from attending Academy events for ten years. Smith posted another apology on YouTube in July 2022, describing his behavior as “unacceptable.”

Seinfeld was speaking on an episode of the Fly On The Wall podcast when he shared his desire to recreate the infamous moment, saying, “Chris Rock was going to be the emcee of the Bowl & Spoon Awards,” which honors the best in breakfast cereals. “And we shot that right after the Will Smith slap. I was going to have somebody come up on the stage, and have Chris punch ’em out as they got there.” Unfortunately, Rock turned down the offer, explaining that “he was a little shook from that event.”

Since the incident, Rock has joked about the Oscars slap during various stand-up shows, including a set with Dave Chappelle. Meanwhile, Unfrosted has not fared well with critics, and despite starring some popular actors, the movie has a 40 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. The Daily Globe and Mail called the film “a distressingly laugh-free affair,” while The Washington Post called it “forgettable.”

Seinfeld’s film revolves around the creation of the Pop Tart and stars Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan, Hugh Grant, Amy Schumer, Max Greenfield, Christian Slater, and Bill Burr
