Teenager admits killing three friends in crash near Dumfries

A tragic accident outside Dumfries in Scotland has resulted in the death of three 16-year-old boys. On March 15, 2022, Jake Loy, who was 17 at the time and driving a Honda with provisional licensing, crashed into another vehicle on the A711 Dumfries to Dalbeattie Road. Loy was reported to have been driving with his friends who were all from Moffat when the collision occurred. As a result of the accident, Finlay Johns, Ian Cannon, and Tyler Johnston lost their lives, and three others were seriously injured.

Loy, now 19 years old, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving in court. Prosecutor Alex Prentice KC argued that driver inexperience and excessive speed were the major contributing factors to the collision. Loy’s Honda split into two from the force of the collision, which was reportedly the most intense damage one crash investigator had ever seen.

Prior to the accident, a member of the same group on Snapchat as the teenagers saw a message that Ian Cannon had sent, expressing fear about Loy’s driving. Cannon addressed his message to the group, informing them that Loy was swerving all over the place and that he was a terrible driver who was flooring it. However, it is unknown at what point during the journey the message was sent.

In July, Loy will appear in court again and face sentencing. The headteacher of Moffat Academy, the school where the victims had been students, expressed grief about the loss. It is difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of the accident as Loy has no recollection of the event
