Foo Fighters teased their fans at the Welcome To Rockville festival with the help of Wolfgang Van Halen. During their set, the band performed a guitar solo, followed by shortened covers of the Beastie Boys’ ‘Sabotage’, Ramones’ ‘Blitzkrieg Pop’, and Nine Inch Nails’ ‘March of the Pigs.’ Following the segment, frontman Dave Grohl expressed his desire to have a solo, stating he never gets one, and would like to perform one now that the trip is coming to a close.
To the surprise of everyone watching, Grohl proceeded with a tap solo segment which he seemingly tried to start, but it did not stop. He raised his arms in the air in celebration before the camera revealed Wolfgang Van Halen ripping through the solo offstage. Grohl appeared somewhat annoyed at Wolfgang, telling him, “I told you to keep that cool, Wolfie! What the fuck are you doing right now? Everybody, give it up for Wolfgang Van Halen.” Wolfgang then played a short snippet of Van Halen’s ‘Hot For Teacher’ before being chased offstage as Grohl said they’d not be able to stop once they started playing more Van Halen tracks.
Grohl then dedicated the song ‘My Hero’ to Wolfgang and his late father, the legendary Eddie Van Halen, who passed away in 2020. Foo Fighters also dedicated ‘My Hero’ to the late legendary record producer, Steve Albini. The veteran record producer was the mastermind behind iconic albums like Nirvana’s In Utero and Manic Street Preachers’ Journal For Plague Lovers. Albini, who had suffered a heart attack, passed away on May 8 while at his recording studio in Chicago, Electronic Audio. His death was confirmed by the studio’s staff members.
In honor of Albini, Grohl told the crowd, “Tonight I’d like to dedicate this song to a friend that we lost the other day, who I’ve known a long, long time. He left us much too soon. He’s touched all of your lives, I’m sure. I’m talking about Steve Albini. Let’s sing this one for him.” It was a fitting tribute to a man who had a significant impact on the music industry, and Foo Fighters’ performance was one that will be remembered for a long time
