Joanna Newsom has given a tribute to Steve Albini by performing ‘Cosmia’ at Kilby Block Party. Albini recorded Newsom’s 2006 album ‘Ys’ and the musician made the dedication in her first advertised live performance since 2020. “He’s been so enormously important in my life musically for so many years but still just as a human, as a person, as a hilarious, loving, loyal friend to so many people,” Newsom said in a personal tribute to Albini before the song.
Steve Albini, the mastermind behind some of rock’s most iconic albums including Nirvana’s ‘In Utero’, Pixies’ ‘Surfer Rosa’ and Manic Street Preachers’ ‘Journal For Plague Lovers’, passed away on May 8 of a heart attack while at Electronic Audio, his recording studio in Chicago. Newsom expressed that Albini, who she described as someone “who I love very, very much and admire in every possible way you can admire a person,” was more than just a music icon but a fiercely loyal friend.
Foo Fighters also honored Albini this week, dedicating a rendition of ‘My Hero’ to the late producer in Charlotte, North Carolina. “He left us much too soon. He’s touched all of your lives, I’m sure. I’m talking about Steve Albini. For those of you who know, you know,” Dave Grohl told the crowd.
