UK records hottest day of the year so far

The UK experienced record-breaking temperatures on Saturday as the country saw its warmest day of the year so far, according to the Met Office. Herstmonceux in East Sussex hit temperatures of 25.9C, while Cassley in northern Scotland recorded temperatures of 25.7C. Gogerddan in Wales also saw a high of 25.1C, while in Northern Ireland, temperatures peaked at 23.8C in Magilligan. However, the Met Office predicts that England will see even warmer temperatures on Sunday.

Sunday is expected to be warm and humid across much of the UK, but thunderstorms and heavy rain are also forecast. The Met Office has issued three yellow thunderstorm warnings, with one covering most areas of western UK, including the majority of Wales, where thunderstorms are predicted between 12:00 BST and 22:00. The second warning is for the western half of Northern Ireland between 11:00 and 19:00, with the third for western Scotland between 14:00 on Sunday and 04:00 on Monday. People in areas with a yellow warning are advised to expect some disruption, particularly with travel, due to potential spray and sudden flooding.

Sunday’s warmer temperatures are expected to be most prominent in southern and eastern parts of England, where temperatures are expected to peak in central areas at around 27C. Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, however, are expected to be cooler than Saturday.

Temperatures rose steadily throughout the week, reaching a previous peak of 24.6C on Thursday in London’s St James’s Park. While the UK’s weather and climate service expects these temperature records to be beaten again soon, Sunday’s heat is predicted to be short-lived due to the thunderstorms and rain forecast to follow
