The family of a 13-year-old boy who died in a collision with a drink-driver has criticised the “heartless” and “disgusting” sentence handed to his killer. Kaylan Hippsley was walking with friends to a youth club in Wales when he was hit by a car driven by Harley Whiteman, 19. Whiteman was sentenced last week to six years and nine months detention after admitting causing death by dangerous driving. Although the UK government says those convicted of this crime are serving longer sentences than ever, Kaylan’s family said the sentence was not severe enough. A petition calling for tougher sentences, which has gained almost 5,000 signatures, is backed by politicians.
During Whiteman’s trial, the court heard the driver had been drinking and taking drugs on the day of the crash, before driving a car from Aberdare to Hirwaun with two passengers.
