Bambie Thug: Meet the designer behind their look

Ireland’s Eurovision entry, Bambie Thug, is creating a storm with their “goth gremlin goblin witch” persona. The act performed Doomsday Blue during Thursday’s semi-final in the hopes of breaking Ireland’s Eurovision losing streak. Bambie Thug’s creativity has been designed by Mariusz Malon, an acclaimed Donegal fashion designer based in the Republic of Ireland. This act is seen as a milestone in Malon’s career. The innovative artist has received acclaim for his unique designs worn by famous UK drag entertainers, making him a stylish addition to Bambie Thug’s Eurovision team.

Mariusz shared a few words about the creative journey of this outlaw songster. He commented Bambie Thug’s style was quite witchy and pagan, attractive to him as an artist. Mariusz’s interpretation of Bambie’s style represents some of his former designs, but with subtle adjustments leading to more remarkable costumes and a fresh approach.

Eurovision regulations stipulate that no changes will be allowed of any kind for the final. Therefore, Mariusz wanted to ensure that his costumes not only initiate conversations, but that they also represent inclusivity. Bambie Thug’s act included them shedding black feather dress to reveal a swimsuit featuring a transgender flag, confirming classical drag traditions.

According to Mariusz, Bambie Thug has been receiving nothing but love since landing in Malmo for the competition. The Buncrana-based designer bears witness to confidence growing within the team that they could win Eurovision. The final is broadcast on BBC One, and the UK’s Olly Alexander will be performing Dizzy. Regardless of the outcome, Bambie Thug has left an emotive mark on the Eurovision stage, cementing themselves as an outlaw icon in the making
