A family living in Hainault, England, had a lucky escape after a man brandishing a sword broke into their home on April 30. The intruder entered the family’s bedroom while they slept, but despite the husband suffering a serious hand injury as he fought the attacker off, the family survived. The father, Henry De Los Rios Polania, gave his first interview to BBC News since the attack, describing the event as a “miracle.” Four others in the area were attacked, including 14-year-old Daniel Anjorin, who later died from his injuries.
Although Mr. Los Rios Polania offered no further details of what happened during the attack, he thanks paramedics, police, and doctors for their assistance, adding that he will always protect his family. He was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday after almost ten hours of surgery to reconstruct tendons and veins and will require further treatment in the future.
After a week of the brutal attack, he said he is still coming to terms with the events that transpired and worried about the long-term impact it would have on his four-year-old daughter. Two police officers and two others were also injured that morning, and a man has been charged with murder and due to stand trial in February. Although the local community has been supportive, Mr. Los Rios Polania said he fears he and his family may never return to their home and would seek refuge elsewhere.
Daniel Anjorin’s parents released a statement on Saturday mourning the loss of their “precious” son. “Our children have lost their loving and precious brother, and we have lost the most loved and amazing son,” they said, revealing the challenge of coming to terms with their loss
