Mark ‘E’ Everett, the frontman of Eels, has had open heart surgery and says that he is lucky after the successful operation. Everett took to Twitter and posted a photo of himself after the surgery with a link to the band’s website, which contained a post from Everett about his surgery. The post talks about the difficulties of touring amid the pandemic and how he went into the hospital following the tour. The death of his father who died of a heart attack when he was 19 helped Everett to monitor his own health.
Everett wrote: “The only good thing that came out of my father dying of a heart attack at age 51 was it taught me to stay on top of heart health.” Everett also details how he had yearly scans to keep an eye on things, and it later became clear that his aorta, the main artery that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body, had an aneurysm. If it wasn’t replaced soon, it was expected to explode sometime in the next few months. This was not related to what happened to his father, but it was because of him that he found out about his own situation. “So thank you to my father, Hugh Everett III, who gave me a parallel universe to presently reside in: one where I’m still alive.”
During the procedure, he underwent open heart surgery. He says his heart was stopped on the table, and they put in a new aorta. Everett was in the hospital for a week with wonderful people helping him through his recovery. In the same post, he also discussed plans to release a new album on June 7, entitled ‘Eels Time!’. He also shared the first taster from the record, ‘Time’.
Everett signed off by saying: “Thanks for reading this and I hope you like the new music. I’m a lucky guy. I’m so glad I got to say hi again.” In other Eels news, the band released a festive Christmas song called ‘Christmas, Why You Gotta Do Me Like This’ at the end of last year
