Horror film The Carpenter’s Son has announced that FKA Twigs will play the mother of Jesus alongside actor Nicolas Cage. According to Deadline, Lotfy Nathan wrote and directed the creepy movie, centred entirely around Jesus’ childhood. The synopsis reads: “The Carpenter’s Son tells the dark story of a family hiding out in Roman Egypt. The son, known only as ‘the Boy’, is driven to doubt by another mysterious child and rebels against his guardian, the Carpenter, revealing inherent powers and a fate beyond his comprehension. As he exercises his own power, the Boy and his family become the target of horrors, natural and divine.” Noah Jupe will star as the Boy, in a film that follows Twigs’ other upcoming horror film, the remake of The Crow.
Twigs revealed last week that she has developed her own deepfake version of herself, created specifically to interact with fans online. She wrote this in a testimony to the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Intellectual Property in Washington D.C. about the ‘No Fakes’ Act, which aims to protect public figures from the unauthorised use of images and likenesses for AI. The AI version of Twigs is called ‘AI Twigs’. According to Rolling Stone, the online version of the artist will be launched later this year to help her stay connected with fans online while focusing on making new music. She revealed that she can use her exact tone of voice to speak many languages and will engage with AI Twigs later this year to handle her online social media interactions.
The Grammy-nominated artist confidently asserted: “These and similar emerging technologies are highly valuable tools both artistically and commercially when under the control of the artist.” In her testimony, she highlighted the potential problems that could arise if AI technologies are not correctly regulated and expressed concerns about the careers and futures of celebrities. She wrote: “That the very essence of our being at its most human level can be violated by the unscrupulous use of AI to create a digital facsimile that purports to be us, and our work, is inherently wrong. It is therefore vital that as an industry and as legislators we work together to ensure we do all we can to protect our creative and intellectual rights as well as the very basis of who we are.”
Once again, Twigs proves to be an innovative artist, embracing emerging technologies while maintaining a focus on her craft. It will be interesting to see how AI Twigs is received by fans when she is unleashed later in the year
