The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) recently posthumously awarded Amy Winehouse with the BRIT Billion award, recognizing Winehouse for her one billion online streams in the UK. The award was accepted at the Amy Winehouse Foundation in London on behalf of Amy by her parents, Mitch and Janis Winehouse. The achievement highlights Winehouse’s incredible talent and success, and her parents said it was wonderful to see her work continue to gain popularity with a new generation of young listeners.
The award was given after Winehouse’s 2007 hit single, “Back to Black,” reached over 150 million listens, making it her most streamed song in the UK. Additionally, Winehouse’s cover of The Zutons’ “Valerie” has earned more than 135 million UK streams. Other hits including “Tears Dry on Their Own,” “Rehab,” “You Know I’m No Good,” and “Love is a Losing Game” all have over 50 million listens.
The BRIT Billion award was launched in 2023 and has also recognized singers like Billie Eilish, The Rolling Stones, Lewis Capaldi, AJ Tracey, Raye, and Olivia Rodrigo. The latter is the youngest to receive the award. Winehouse’s recognition comes not long after the release of the biopic “Back to Black” in which highly-praised actress Marisa Abela plays Winehouse.
Lead actress Abela “captures Winehouse’s fascinating mix of self-belief and frailty” and “takes on her songs pretty remarkably,” according to NME. Winehouse is a remarkable artist who will always be honored for her immense talent, achievements, and undeniable contribution to music. Her music continues to impact and influence new audiences today
