Rob McElhenney, the creator of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”, has responded to comments made by comedian Jerry Seinfeld. Seinfeld recently claimed that developing political correctness has negatively impacted comedy on television. In an interview with The New Yorker, Seinfeld blamed “the extreme left [and] PC crap and people worrying so much about offending other people” as the “death” of comedy and said that jokes from his series would not be allowed to air today. He cited an example from one episode of Seinfeld where the character Kramer starts a business using homeless people to pull rickshaws.

McElhenney responded with a one-word reply of “Probably,” accompanied by a picture of the sitcom’s character Matthew “Rickety Cricket” Mara. Some fans of the show agreed with McElhenney and believed that if you punch up and not down, people tend not to get mad at the jokes. However, other users pointed out that some episodes of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” had been removed due to the use of blackface, and that Danny DeVito had been brought onto the show to avoid cancellation.

In 2020, episodes of the show were removed from streaming services due to the controversial use of blackface by two of the characters, including McElhenney’s ‘Mac’. DeVito joined the show in 2006.
