Marcus Arduini Monzo, a dual Spanish-Brazilian national living in Newham, east London, appeared at the Old Bailey this week accused of murdering a 14-year-old boy by running up behind him and attacking him with a samurai sword. The attack took place on April 30, as the boy walked to school in Hainault, north-east London. Four other people, including two police officers, were also seriously injured in separate attacks within 20 minutes. A trial is set to begin in February, with a plea hearing scheduled for July 23.
During Tuesday’s hearing, Monzo confirmed his name and date of birth as he stood in the dock. He was remanded in custody. When police officers went to help the teenager, Monzo appeared from a bush and attacked PC Yasmin Margaret Mechem-Whitfield, causing her “significant injuries”. It is alleged that Monzo went on to attack a father in the bedroom of his home, before stabbing a second officer with the same sword.
