WILLOW reflects on debut single ‘Whip My Hair’: “My message hasn’t really changed”

WILLOW, the singer behind the 2010 hit single ‘Whip My Hair’, has spoken about her debut track as it approaches its 10th anniversary. She explained that ‘Whip My Hair’ remains “a foundation for everything that has come later,” and that the song’s message of “be yourself, live out loud, don’t care what anybody thinks, express yourself!” still speaks to her. Despite her success in the music industry, the 23-year-old revealed that she had tried to “run away from” music, but that “it just keeps coming back.”

Currently working on her sixth studio album, ‘Empathogens’, WILLOW said that the forthcoming LP sees her moving away from pop-punk and instead exploring jazzy and funk-inspired sounds. Lead singles ‘Symptom Of Life’ and ‘Big Feelings’ lean close to the psychedelic R&B sound of her first three albums.

‘Whip My Hair’ marked the beginning of a musical career that has seen WILLOW release five solo studio albums and a collaborative LP with Tyler Cole, under the name The Anxiety. Described as her breaking “sonically mature new ground,” her latest album ‘COPINGMECHANISM’, released in 2022, was praised by NME for its thoughtful lyrics and guitar-driven sound.

Finally, WILLOW suggested that her route to success was different to today’s young artists, telling NME: “I was one of those lucky people who got to experience it before Instagram and TikTok… I cannot fathom how different it would have been,” adding that if she were 10 years old and releasing ‘Whip My Hair’ today, it “would probably be lit.
