Kris Hallenga, the creator of breast cancer charity CoppaFeel!, has passed away at age 38. The untimely passing occurred 15 years after Hallenga was first diagnosed with terminal breast cancer. Her own diagnosis inspired her to create CoppaFeel! and offer support to young people in a similar position. The charity emphasized Hallenga’s unique approach to life, remarking that she “showed us that it is possible to live life to the full with cancer”.
Hallenga initially sought medical help for over a year before finally being diagnosed with cancer in 2009. By then, her prognosis was terminal. Hallenga was determined to fight the perception that cancer was an affliction suffered only by women of a certain age. Through CoppaFeel!, she worked tirelessly to raise awareness of breast cancer in young people. The charity’s mission was to educate young people so that all breast cancer could be diagnosed early.
In addition to her charitable work with CoppaFeel!, Hallenga was also a columnist at The Sun, and a documentary about her life and work – Kris: Dying to Live – was aired on BBC Three in 2014. Notably, last year, Hallenga held a living funeral attended by celebrities including Dawn French.
Hallenga’s family has requested privacy following her death. CoppaFeel! has asked that Hallenga be remembered for the amazing life she led and the things she achieved, and, above all else, has encouraged people to check their chests regularly for signs of this terrible affliction
