The Eurovision Song Contest’s official opening took place in Malmo, where representatives from 37 countries arrived to compete in the world’s largest live music contest. The 100,000 visitors will have high hopes this year’s event is just as spectacular as last year when Sweden’s Loreen won with her song Tattoo.

The UK’s hopes rest on the shoulders of Olly Alexander with his upbeat dance number Dizzy. The singer, actor and fashion icon arrived at the opening ceremony wearing a multi-coloured robe. Finland’s entry, Windows95man, made a dramatic entrance at the ceremony. Teemu Keisteri, a Finnish visual artist and DJ, emerged from a giant egg before his performance.

Marcus and Martinus, representing host country Sweden, strutted down the turquoise carpet wearing denim as a statement of fashion. While Lithuania’s Silvester Belt made sure he wasn’t outdone in the fashion stakes. Ireland will rely on Bambie Thug to bring home the trophy, who was seen striking a dramatic pose at the opening ceremony.

Ukraine, represented by Alyona Alyona and Jerry Heil, have high hopes of success. Joost Klein, the Netherlands representative, also chose to make a statement by working the power suit look big time. A variety of fashion statements were on show, such as Spain’s Nebulossa’s outfit, and the Czech Republic’s Aiko’s colour coordination.

The Eurovision Song Contest’s final takes place next weekend and the competition is fierce, with all contestants hoping they can emulate Sweden’s Loreen and write their names into the competition’s history books
