Australian post-hardcore band Trophy Eyes have issued a statement following a stagediving incident involving frontman John Floreani that left a fan, Bird Piché, needing spinal surgery. The incident took place during a show at Mohawk Place in Buffalo, New York on April 30. The band have expressed their heartbreak over the incident and have shared an official statement on social media along with a link to a GoFundMe campaign set up to raise money for Piché.
Trophy Eyes have a history of incidents relating to stagediving, as per Stereogum. In 2023, the band were criticised by a fan for “encouraging mosh pits and crowd surfing” after an Atlanta show, to which they replied: “fuck you”. Piché’s injuries were described as “a catastrophic spinal cord injury”. She underwent extensive surgery but will need further treatment and will not be able to work during this time. The GoFundMe page has raised over $35,000 at the time of writing.
The band shut down the show when Piché was injured and Floreani accompanied her to the hospital with her family. “This situation has shaken us all to our core, and we ask for patience while we look to help Bird navigate this difficult time,” the band said in their statement. “Please, keep Bird in your thoughts. We remain in close contact with them and will expand on this as new news arrives.” Trophy Eyes’ most recent album is 2023’s ‘Suicide and Sunshine,’ their fourth studio release, and their first after the departure of guitarist Andrew Hallett, who has been replaced by Josh Campiao
