Ryan Gosling has announced that he will be avoiding darker roles in his future work, in order to prioritize his mental health and family life. In his most recent role, as a stuntman working on his ex-girlfriend’s directorial debut film in The Fall Guy, he works alongside Emily Blunt to uncover a conspiracy connected to the production’s lead actor. However, Gosling spoke about no longer taking on psychologically demanding roles, stating his decisions are “with Eva and we make them with our family in mind first.”
Gosling shared that he does not take on roles that would put him in a “dark place” and that he is more mindful of how his decisions at work may impact his personal life. “This moment is what I feel like trying to read the room at home and feel like what is going to be best for all of us,” he explained. Gosling and Eva Mendes are parents to two children.
The actor added that his interest in taking on more joyful roles such as his in La La Land stemmed partly from his intention to involve his family in his work life. “It was just sort of like, ‘Oh, this will be fun for them too, because even though they’re not coming to set, we’re practicing piano every day, or we’re dancing, or we’re singing.’ Their interest in ‘Barbie’ and their disinterest in Ken was an inspiration.”
The Fall Guy, which is directed by David Leitch and written by Drew Pearce, has received positive reviews, being described as a “delight,” with its “sparkling script,” and “to-die-for comic chemistry” between Gosling and Blunt. Producer Emily McCormick revealed that Taylor Swift’s song, “All Too Well,” was not originally intended to be used in a scene where Gosling’s character cries in his car, but Gosling himself requested it, stating that the song fits with the messy and wild love story of the film
