Richard Ashcroft: 'I was the mouthy singer, but now I'll inspire'

Richard Ashcroft, the former lead singer of The Verve, has spoken out about the importance of quality and authenticity in music. As a teenager, Ashcroft was influenced by musicians from Manchester who played locally. He hopes that his upcoming shows in Wigan will inspire a new generation of musicians and provide a platform for local bands. “The Homecoming” shows are a chance for Ashcroft to play some of his most-loved hits and to relive memories from his past.

Ashcroft acknowledges that the music industry has changed significantly since he first began his career in the early 1990s. He observes that younger listeners are now discerning and reject “plastic” music. Ashcroft’s own son loves listening to Lana Del Rey, and it is clear that authenticity is important to him. He sees his shows in Wigan as a way of generating an “amazing legacy” for the town.

Despite being known for his arrogance earlier in his career, Ashcroft is now keen to give back to his community. He wants to encourage young people to take control of their own lives and to pursue their goals, regardless of what others may think. Ashcroft seems to have abandoned any form of earlier arrogance in favor of a more grounded approach.

The shows will be taking place on 20th and 21st July at Wigan Warrior’s Robin Park. Ashcroft is hoping that the events will inspire people from across the North West of England to attend and will provide “a focal point for music.
