In an interview with The Times, Alexander admitted to struggling with the situation, feeling out of sorts during a Eurovision pre-party in London. He also started to cry during the interview when asked about the controversy, explaining that there were many things he wished were different.
The Queers for Palestine group wrote an open letter urging Alexander to boycott Eurovision, stating that the European Broadcasting Union’s decision to include Israel endorses the “catastrophic violence” Israel has inflicted on Palestine. While some people have chosen to boycott this year’s contest in protest, Alexander has chosen not to do so, stating his belief in bringing people together through music. He also supports a ceasefire and the safety and security of civilians for both Palestine and Israel.
Last year, Alexander was one of many who signed a pro-Palestine letter calling Israel an “apartheid state” and accusing it of genocide. It is unclear whether this influenced his decision to participate in Eurovision. Despite the controversy and his emotional struggles, Alexander is hoping to enjoy some aspects of Eurovision and is looking forward to performing at the grand final.
