A new festive episode of Gavin and Stacey will air on Christmas Day, James Corden has confirmed. Writing on Instagram, Corden revealed that he and co-creator Ruth Jones had finished writing “the last ever episode” of the much-loved comedy, which previously aired in a one-off special in 2019. The episode is expected to involve most of the original cast, including Matthew Horne and Joanna Page as the titular couple and Rob Brydon as Stacey’s uncle Bryn.
Corden declined to reveal any plot details for the upcoming episode, which is likely to be eagerly anticipated by fans. The 2019 special ended on a cliffhanger, with Nessa (Jones) proposing to Smithy (Corden) in front of their friends and family. The episode was one of the biggest hits of the Christmas season, attracting more than 18 million viewers across its various airings.
Gavin and Stacey first aired in 2007, and ran for three seasons before ending in 2010. It attracted a devoted following for its warm-hearted characters and gentle humour, and was credited with reviving interest in regional British accents. Jones and Corden, who both starred in the series, previously said they would only return to the show if they had a good idea for a story.
The news of a new episode will be welcome to fans who have been waiting for news of the show’s return for more than two years. The series remains one of the BBC’s most popular comedies, and has been available on streaming platforms including Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. The new episode is expected to be simulcast on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Christmas Day
