Liverpool’s Citizen of Honour award is set to be presented to Michael Cullen, better known as Speedo Mick, for his fundraising efforts, raising over a million pounds for charity over the years. The award will be given to him at Liverpool Town Hall by the Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Mary Rassmussen, this week on Thursday, 9 May.
Speedo Mick’s dedication to fundraising includes completing challenges such as walking across the whole of the UK wearing little more than swimming trunks. He has walked from John O’Groats to Land’s End, swum the English Channel, and climbed four mountains, to name just a few of his accomplishments. His charitable endeavours have earned him nominations for a Citizen of Honour award.
Despite battling through recent storms such as Storm Ciara and Storm Dennis in February this year, Speedo Mick’s determination remains unwavering. He has raised funds for over 120 organisations, including homeless shelters, mental health and wellbeing charities, and disadvantaged youth programs.
When asked about this upcoming award, Speedo Mick said: “I cannot receive a more meaningful award as it is from my hometown of Liverpool and it is this that means the world to me. I am overwhelmed and extremely grateful indeed to be awarded the Liverpool Citizen of Honour Award.”
The Citizen of Honour award acknowledges individuals who have contributed significantly to enriching the public image of Liverpool. The award was introduced in 2008 and has previously been presented to poet and performer Levi Tafari as well as Professor Doctor Shiv Pande MBE for his achievements in medicine
