Interstella 555, the film by electronic music duo Daft Punk, is set to be showcased in North America for the very first time with a 4K remastered version screening at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York this June. The anime film tells the story of four alien musicians who are kidnapped and disguised as humans by their producer, with their pilot Shep carrying out a rescue mission.
Originally released in 2003 to accompany Daft Punk’s second major album, Discovery, the full-length anime was written by the duo in collaboration with Cédric Hervet, and directed by Japanese manga artist Leiji Matsumoto as well as Kazuhisa Takenouchi, Hirotoshi Rissen and Daisuke Nishio. While it was scarcely shown in cinemas, excerpts from the film were used for the music videos for tracks on the Discovery album such as Digital Love, Aerodynamic, Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger, and One More Time.
Alongside the North American debut of Interstella 555, the Tribeca Film Festival will feature other films exploring the lives and impact of music legends, such as the new Avicii documentary, Avicii – I’m Tim. Daft Punk dissolved their partnership earlier this year after an illustrious 28-year career that saw the release of four studio albums, as well as an extended soundtrack to the sci-fi film, Tron Legacy.
