Soft Play, formerly known as Slaves, has announced their new album, titled ‘Heavy Jelly,’ and released their latest track, ‘Act Violently.’ The song takes its cues from Brit punk and nu-metal with its heavy sound and clean production. The song was inspired by an incident in which the band almost got hit by an e-scooter after leaving an album session at The Libertines’ Albion Rooms studio in Margate. The accompanying music video sees Holman stalked by an e-scooter wherever he goes.
‘Heavy Jelly’ is the band’s first album under their new name and their first long-form project in over six years. Physical formats of the album include CD, black vinyl, a signed CD exclusive to HMV and a limited green vinyl that’s only available via the band’s official store and select indie retailers.
The band revealed that they changed their name due to perceived racial insensitivity with the old name and the subsequent discomfort it caused someone they admired. The band previously responded defensively to criticisms of their name but approached changing it after years of therapy to see past that. The album is set to feature twelve tracks, one of which is written from the perspective of mega-assassin John Wick.
Soft Play will also embark on a summer tour starting with The Great Escape in Brighton and concluding with Victorious Festival in Portsmouth. The band has marked the summer as their return to live music with the release of their album and tour dates
